Apprenticeship Requirements

Length of Program:

The apprenticeship generally spans four years, with class held one week (50 hrs) every three months. The remainder of the training occurring on the job.

Requirements:

Apprentices must be at least 18 years old Iron Workers must perform a great deal of climbing, reaching, and balancing, often at great heights. To protect them from falls they are trained in the use of personal fall protection equipment, including safety harnesses and nets Possess high school diploma or GED Pass a physical exam that will include screening for drugs Math, reading, and writing skills are essential for succeeding in the program. Some of the locals use a lottery system to select applicants when openings occur in their apprenticeship programs. Others, such as Local 8 and Local 25 use an aptitude test as well.
