Apprenticeship Overview

Length of Program

  • 4 years
  • Class is held one week (50 hours) every three months
  • The remainder of the training occurring on the job


Requirements:

  • Must perform a great deal of climbing, reaching, and balancing, often at great heights
  • Trained in the use of personal fall protection equipment & safety harnesses
  • Math, reading, and writing skills are essential for succeeding in the program
  • Pre-physical evaluation & drug test
  • Some of the locals use a lottery system to select applicants when openings occur in their apprenticeship programs. Others, such as Local 8 and Local 25 use an aptitude test as well.

Scope of Work

Iron Workers are skilled professionals responsible for erecting structural steel and precast concrete components, as well as positioning reinforcing steel bars and tensioning cables in concrete construction. Their expertise extends to the rigging, moving, and installation of heavy machinery and pre-fabricated building systems. They also specialize in the installation of ornamental metals including steel, aluminum, and other architectural elements such as staircases, catwalks, grating, grills, conveyors, and screens. All work is performed with precision to meet the exact tolerances specified in construction blueprints.
