Scope of Work

Sheet Metal Workers are responsible for the fabrication and installation of ductwork used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Their expertise also extends to the fabrication and installation of a variety of other components, including metal roof decking, architectural sheet metal, industrial paint ovens, spray booths, dust collection systems, and commercial food service equipment. Work typically begins with reading and interpreting blueprints, laying out patterns on flat metal sheets, forming and fabricating parts in the shop, and completing installation on-site.

Working Conditions

Sheet Metal Workers are distinguished within the construction trades by the significant amount of shop-based fabrication involved in their work. Projects often begin with flat sheets of metal, from which workers develop precise patterns using shop drawings. Once fabricated, components are transported to the construction site for final installation. The role requires both technical skill in a controlled shop environment and hands-on installation work in the field.
