A significant portion of the work is performed at elevations exceeding 10 feet, such as on towers and multi-story buildings. Painters are responsible for surface preparation followed by the application of finishes including paint, varnish, enamel, lacquer, and other coatings. Additionally, they may install wall coverings such as paper, fabric, and vinyl. Proficiency in paint mixing, sandblasting, and water blasting is also required.

Working Conditions

Painters operate in a variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors. Exterior work is typically conducted during moderate weather conditions. Certain roles, particularly in maintenance and office renovation, may require evening or weekend hours. Although the trade is seasonal, advancements in materials and application techniques have contributed to more consistent year-round employment. Occupational hazards may include exposure to toxic substances, risk of falls, and inhalation of fumes or particulates. The job often involves extended periods of standing, bending, climbing, and working with arms elevated above shoulder height.
